Barges... Environmentally Friendly

Barge transportation is the cleanest, safest and most efficient mode of surface transportation.  According to a peer reviewed modal comparison study performed by the Texas Transportation Institute Center for Ports and Waterways at Texas A&M University for the National Waterways Foundation and the U.S. Maritime Administration:

  • Barges move a ton of cargo 576 miles on a gallon of fuel, compared to 413 miles for rail and 155 miles for truck
  • Trains generate 39% more CO2 and trucks generate 371% more CO2 than is generated to move same cargo by barge
  • A single tank barge carries as much cargo as 46 rail cars or 144 tank trucks
  • Members of the public are 2171.5 times more likely to be injured in a truck accident and 125.2 times more likely to be injured in a train accident than they are to be involved in a barge accident
